Uptime is the percentage of time a service is operational. 99% monthly equals about 7 hours of allowed downtime, 99.9% equals 43 minutes, 99.99% equals 4 minutes. Each additional nine costs exponentially more in infrastructure and processes. For most small and medium companies, 99.9% is a reasonable and sufficient target.
